79th Annual Golden Globe Awards POC Winners

The 79th Annual Golden Globes Awards took place on January 9th, 2021. As previously reported, there were a total of 32 people of color and POC-themed projects nominated across nine awards categories. 

During the ceremony, the following people of color and POC-themed projects took home the award.

Best Picture, Musical or Comedy: The diverse remake of the film and Broadway musical classic West Side Story featuring a largely Hispanic cast took home one of the two Best Picture awards of the night.

Best Motion Picture, Animated: The film Encanto took home the first-ever award for Latino-themed animated feature.

Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture, Drama: The six-time Golden Globe nominee (twice for his role on the popular TV sitcom The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, Ali, The Pursuit of Happyness, and Concussion) finally took home the honor for his leading role in the biopic King Richard. The film is based on the life of tennis legends William's sister's father, Richard Williams.

Best Supporting Actress, Motion Picture: Ariana DeBose received her first nomination and first win for her role in the musical film remake of West Side Story.

Best Limited Series, Anthology Series or a Motion Picture made for Television: NAACP and Academy Award-winning writer, director, and producer Barry Jenkin's miniseries The Underground Railroad was honored for its realistic portrayal of the adaptation of the book of the same name about the plight of American chattel slaves attempting to escape slavery in the South.

Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series, Drama: The transwoman actress Mj Rodriguez took home her first award for her first nomination for the final season of the groundbreaking series Pose.

Best Supporting Actor, Television: Veteran South Korean actor O Yeong-su received his first nomination and first win for his role in the massive hit drama Squid Game.
