Global Flicks: Indian Blockbuster ‘RRR’ Grosses $132 Million USD; Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s Next Film Picked Up By Netflix; ‘The Takedown’ Starring Omar Sy Releases On Netflix

Asia: Indian blockbuster RRR has grossed a record-breaking $132 million. It is an action-period piece set in the 1920s and chronicles the friendship of real Indian freedom fighters Alluri Sitarama Raju (Ram Charan) and Komaram Bheem (NTR Jr). With a $65 million box office opening weekend, the film is currently set in third place for the highest-grossing film ever out of India.  

New Hong Kong action film War Customized starring Jacky Cheung and Nicholas Tse. Emperor Motion Pictures is the acting production house and heavy-hitting director Herman Yau (Shockwave 1 and Shockwave 2) will helm the project. Nicholas Tse will also be acting as the fight choreographer. The plot details are being withheld but the film is considered an adrenaline-action film.

Latin America: Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s next film will be on Netflix. Titled Bardo, A Chronicle Of A Handful Of Truths will debut at the end of this year on the streaming mega-giant. The film will star Daniel Giménez Cacho (Who Killed Sara?) as a journalist who experiences an existential crisis.  

Middle East: Eleven Days In May premiered at a London charity event this year. The film was co-directed by Palestinian filmmaker Mohammed Sawwaf and Michael Winterbottom. The film pays tribute to the 67 children murdered in Gaza in the span of 11 days back in 2021. The premiere took place at the Picturehouse Central on May 4th.  

Malmö Arab Film Festival is hosted Saudi Arabia as the guest of honor at its 12th festival. It highlighted promising and upcoming filmmakers that have been empowering Saudi cinema. Five feature films and seven short films were shown. The festival took place from May 4th to May 9th.  

Europe: Netflix has released the highly anticipated heist film The Takedown. Led by Lupin star Omar Sy, the film is a sequel to On The Other Side Of The Tracks. It follows two opposing cops investigating a high-end criminal case. The film is available now for streaming. The trailer can be seen here.  

Mia Maelzar stars in the spotlight film at Cannes The Braid. Created by Laetiitia Colombani, the film is based on her novel of the same name which has gone on to sell over 2 million copies worldwide. The story follows three women on three different continents struggling to live. Mia Maelzer plays Smita, an Untouchable who wishes to send her daughter to school and away from her grueling life. The film is distributed by the French company SND. It will be shown at Cannes from May 17th to May 25th.
