Motion Picture: Social Satire, AMC on Demand, Catwoman

Action/fantasy/sci-fi: Black and Blue is film starring Naomi Harris (Moonlight) as a new officer in the New Orleans force. Harris is forced to choose who to protect her neighborhood or the police force. The film is a social commentary on the issues of police brutality and the pressure people of color face being in an authoritative figure in a time of distrust in government power. But once Harris becomes a witness to a murder committed by her own co-workers, she must escape from the neighborhood from those seeking revenge and the double-dealing cops.

Drama: A24 presents a new musical drama, Waves, from the mind of director-writer Trey Edward Schults (It Comes at Night) in a new film is about the somewhat complex relationships in a suburban African American family. Starring Sterling K. Brown (This is Us), Lucas Hedges( Boy Erased), Kelvin Harrison Jr (Luce) as the lead, the film makes a powerful statement about love and forgiveness. 

Receiving the Palms d’Or award at the Cannes Film Festival, there has been massive talk about the film, Parasite. From Director Bong Joon-ho (SnowPiercer) the film takes a look into a classism in South Korea. The film centers around the poor destitute Kim family trick their wealthy neighbors, the Parks in hiring their family to work for them and trouble ensues. The social satire speaks heavily on the income gap between the rich and poor in South Korea. Many already agreeing that it is the Best Movie of the year, making it the must see film of the year. 

Industry update: AMC is now presenting, AMC theaters on-demand video service. Founded in 1920, the company has grown to be the largest movie theater company in the world, integrating to online video services video will promote longevity for the company. It was reported,  “AMC Theaters On Demand, will offer about 2,000 films for sale or rent after their theatrical runs, just as iTunes, Amazon and other video-on-demand retailers do.” The films will appear after the window period of being in theaters for approximately 90 days. Six million AMC stubs members who watched the Lion King will have exclusive access to watch the film on demand through the service. Stub members will be allowed to watch films for free if they went to go see it in the theaters, prompting people to still hit the theaters. 

Zoe Kravitz has been cast in Matt Reeves Catwoman and is rumored to appear in Robert Pattison’s Batman reboot that will hone in on Batman’s detective skills. Reeves’ film will be heavily influenced by film noir and the mystery of the genre. Kravitz having some experience in mystery dramas such as Big Little Lies will hopefully bring in a strong performance and will reprise the role of Catwoman.

Disney has officially released the catalog in over 300 tweets including original shows and films for 6.99 a month. Dating back to content from the 1940s, the streaming service will be divided into seven sections: Disney films, Disney animation, Disney Channel Originals, Pixar, Star Wars, Marvel, and National Geographic. The service will present original spin-off series based on Star Wars called The Mandalorian, as well the High School Musical franchise. Disney+ will launch on November 12th globally.
