Receipts: A Home Run For ‘Hamilton’; ‘Demon Slayer’ Continues To Dominate

Domestic: Released on Friday, September 5, 2025, the highly popular Hamilton had a theatrical re-release to celebrate the musical’s 10th anniversary, debuting in second at the domestic box office for Weekend 36 of 2025. The film grossed $10.114 million domestically across its opening weekend. The musical’s active legion of fans may be right on the money with their praise, considering the film sits at a near-flawless 98% critic score and 99% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Originally released worldwide via Disney+ on Friday, July 3, 2020, the film was immensely popular upon its initial release, warranting this year’s first-time theatrical release of the musical. The film is a live recording of the original Broadway production, chronicling the life story of Founding Father Alexander Hamilton across two acts.

In fifth place, down two spots from last week, is Darren Aronofsky’s newest feature, Caught Stealing. In its second weekend of release, the film earned $3.183 million across Weekend 36, down 59.2% from the previous weekend, and bringing its total domestic gross to $14.884 million. Considering director Aronofsky’s successful track record, it is no surprise that the film has been mostly well-received, currently sitting at an 84% critic and audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Caught Stealing follows former baseball standout-turned-bartender Hank Thompson (Austin Butler), whose plans to pet-sit a neighbor’s cat run afoul when he suddenly becomes an adversary to a band of New York City gangsters.

Still kicking in its seventh week of release is The Fantastic Four: First Steps, which earned $2.872 million across Weekend 36, down 42.7% from the previous weekend, and bringing the film’s total domestic gross to an impressive $270.253 million.

International: In Japan, the box office Weekend 36 of 2025 (Saturday, September 6, 2025, to  Sunday, September 7, 2025) was once again dominated by Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Infinity Castle, now in its eighth week of release. Two months into its theatrical release, the film came in first, earning $5.457 million across the weekend, down only 26.7% from the previous report. Infinity Castle has now earned $213.716 million in Japan alone, cementing the feature as an all-around global hit.

In South Korea, the psychological thriller Murder Report was first at the box office for Weekend 36 of 2025 (Thursday, September 4, to Sunday, September 7, 2025). Beginning its theatrical run on Friday, September 5, 2025, the film earned an estimated $1 million across its debut weekend. The film tells the story of a notorious serial killer, Yeong Hoon (Jung Sung-il), who claimed the lives of eleven victims, as he sits down with veteran reporter Seon Joo (Cho Yeo-jeong) for a long-awaited interview.

Streaming: Over on Netflix’s Global Top 10 English Movies list (Monday, September 1, 2025, to Sunday, September 7, 2025), KPop Demon Hunters secured the second spot. In its 12th week of release, the film brought in 25.4 million views across 42.4 million hours of viewing time. Already the most-watched Netflix film of all time, the film’s success has been boosted by its popular single, “Golden” by HUNTR/X, which remains at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 list for the week of Saturday, September 13, 2025.

In third place is The Woman King, which was initially released theatrically on Friday, September 16, 2022. The film has reemerged as a success on Netflix, sitting in the top 10 for its third consecutive week and earning 4 million views across 9 million hours of viewing time. The film was highly successful with audiences and critics alike upon its release, earning a 94% critic rating and a near-perfect 99% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.

The Woman King follows a group of female warriors in Africa who fiercely protect their Kingdom of Dahomey. When a new threat unveils itself, Nanisca (Viola Davis), their leader, must train them for their most intense and threatening battle yet.

On Netflix’s Non-English Top 10 Movies list, South Korean rom-com Love Untangled comes in first. In its second week of release, the film garnered 8.2 million views and 16.6 million hours of viewing time across its second week in the top 10. The film follows teen Park Se-ri (Shin Eun-soo) as she prepares to straighten her extremely curly hair to impress a popular boy in school. However, when transfer student Han Yoon-seok (Gong Myung) arrives, Park Se-ri’s plans may have to change.

We Strangers is available to stream on VOD as of Tuesday, September 9, 2025. Following the film’s world premiere at the 2024 SXSW Film Festival, it was acquired by Quiver Distribution and had a limited theatrical release beginning Friday, August 22, 2025. 

Set in Gary, Indiana, the film follows commercial cleaner Rayelle (Kirby Howell-Baptiste), who begins to work as a housekeeper for a therapist. When she finds herself deep in a lie, Rayelle must contemplate how far she’s willing to take her deception. The film was primarily met with praise upon its release, currently sitting at an 88% critic approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
