Receipts: Block Buster Take Over At The End Of June; More To Come
Domestic: The beloved month of June is coming to an end, but before we move on to July, final updates are in order. Previously, it seemed there was a strong indie presence at the box office, which overshadowed some big studio blockbusters. Will that still be the case, or have the studios reclaimed their territory? Let's take a look at the numbers.
Michael is still in theaters, though it might be coming to a close soon; it has an outstanding two-month run at the box office. It is currently on demand to rent or buy, but studios have yet to announce when the film will be available for free streaming. With this film sitting at the 2nd-highest-grossing film this year, it is safe to say it surpasses any other biopic in its genre.
Toy Story 5 is here to give The Super Mario Galaxy Movie a run for the number one spot. With a worldwide opening weekend of roughly $312 million, Toy Story 5 is on track to cross the $1 billion milestone. This film is also breaking records for the studio, with a domestic opening weekend gross of about $160 million, making it the largest animated opening of all time for Disney/Pixar. With numbers like these, it is easy to imagine Disney will expand this franchise in the future.
Disclosure Day is experiencing a significant decline in viewership, possibly due to heavy competition at the box office. Still, the film did fairly well during its opening weekend. Grossing about $44.5 million dollars, which surpassed early predictions. Unfortunately, with the release of Toy Story 5 and Supergirl, it has been a challenge for audiences to give this film a chance.
Speaking of Supergirl, it is not having a super good time at the box office. The film had a tragic domestic opening of about $38 million and so far has grossed a sad $79 million. This large-budget film is projected to make $200 globally, which would still be a major loss for the studio, about a $120 million loss. This studio invested about $170 million to produce the film and $120 million to market it, and with the newly rebooted DC Universe, this could raise concerns about the future of the DCU.
Although the franchise took a steep 73% drop in viewership during the second week, Scary Movie 6 is extremely profitable for Paramount. The film grossed over $200 million fairly quickly against a small $30 million budget. With that in mind, the studio probably looks at this as a smash hit, and they are right.
In Indie news, Obsession has surpassed Sinners as the highest-grossing live-action horror movie. Currently, Obsession has grossed about $377 million and is still climbing, which beats Sinners’ overall gross by about $7 million. This raises questions amongst the audience about whether or not Obsession will be considered for any Academy Awards, but unfortunately, it is too soon to tell.
International: Let's take a look at two standout international films for this week.
Main Vaapas Aaunga is an Indian Hindi-language romantic drama set during the Partition-era migration. This film explores how past memories shape identities and sustain the human spirit across many generations. This limited-release film has grossed about $1.3 million worldwide, with its highest markets being domestic and the UAE.
Bharat Bhhagya Viddhaata is an Indian Hindi-language thriller that follows hospital workers who are keeping 400 people alive inside Cama Hospital while armed assailants strike the city during terror attacks in India. Due to this film being a very limited release, it has only grossed $4,000 worldwide. However, this true story shares a powerful message about the actions of brave hospital workers on the day of the attacks and deserves recognition despite its small release.
Streaming: Let's take a look at the global numbers for non-English streaming films for the week of 6/22/26 - 6/28/26.
The Korean film, Husband in Action, has been in the Top Ten for the second week in a row, sitting in 1st place this week. With a run time of about 1 hour and 49 minutes, this film is pulling in about 6.3 million views.
Blast is a 2026 Indian Tamil-language action thriller about a seemingly normal family that has to use their secret martial art abilities to fight against a ruthless gang. This film sits in 2nd place on the Top Ten, clocking in at about 4.4 million views.
Bhooth Bangla is still holding strong in the Top Ten, sitting at 1.5 million views. This film has been on the charts for about 3 weeks, and I don't see it going anywhere anytime soon.
King Kaew is a Thai supernatural horror film that is based on the true story of King Kaew Loosungnoen. She is the second female death row inmate in Thailand who was executed by firing squad.
Sitting in 10th place, the film Raja Shivaji is an Indian historical action drama based on the founder of the Maratha empire, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.
That's a wrap on June, but don't sign off just yet because July has so much in store!
