Receipts: ‘F1’ Races To The Top; ‘Kokuhô’ Secures Number One Spot In Japan

Domestic: F1 raced to the top of the box office in its opening weekend, earning $57 million domestically. With a steep $200–300 million budget, the film is off to a promising start in earning it back. Reactions have been overwhelmingly positive, with an impressive 97% audience score and 83% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Released on Friday, June 27, 2025, F1 follows Sonny (Brad Pitt), a retired Formula 1 driver who returns to the racetrack to mentor up-and-coming racer Joshua (Damson Idris), all while chasing the glory that eluded him in his heyday.

In its second weekend, Pixar’s Elio takes the third spot in the domestic box office, raking in $10.4 million; an unfortunately large 50% drop from its opening. The animated feature has now grossed nearly $42 million domestically against its $150–200 million budget; meaning that so far, Elio has been a major box office failure. Even though its box office performance has been rather lackluster, the film has been greeted with positive reviews, holding an 83% critic score and a 91% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.

The film, released on Friday, June 20, 2025, is a family-friendly space adventure following Elio (Yonas Kibreab), a boy with a deep admiration for space who blasts off on an intergalactic adventure, befriending all sorts of quirky extraterrestrials along the way.

Still holding strong in sixth place, Lilo and Stitch remains in the box office top 10 for a sixth consecutive weekend. The film earned $6.8 million this weekend, down only 29.6% from the previous week, bringing its gross domestic total to $400 million on a $100 million budget and cementing it as a major win for Disney. Critical reception has been mixed, albeit mostly warm, with a 71% critic score. Audiences, however, are enchanted with the familiar family-friendly feature, with a stellar 93% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Materialists holds onto its top 10 box office spot for a third weekend, sitting in eighth. The film brought in another $3 million, down 48% from last weekend, bringing its domestic total to $30.4 million against a $20 million budget. Audiences have been lukewarm towards the feature, with a weak 67% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. Critics, on the other hand, have been far more receptive to Celine Song’s narrative, giving it an 80%.

Following the breakout success of 2023’s awards favorite Past Lives, director Song takes on romance once again with Materialists. Set in New York City, luxury matchmaker Lucy (Dakota Johnson) finds herself in a love triangle between a seemingly perfect fit, Harry (Pedro Pascal), and her flawed ex, John (Chris Evans).

Ballerina remains in the top 10 at the box office for a fourth straight weekend, coming in at ninth. The prequel earned $2.2 million, a steep 51.4% decline from last weekend, bringing its domestic gross to $55.5 million against a $90 million budget. The film’s box office and critic scores have both been lukewarm, with critics giving it 76% on Rotten Tomatoes. Audiences have seemingly enjoyed the film the most, awarding it a stellar 93%.

Rounding out the box office top 10 is Karate Kid: Legends, which brought in just under $1 million, a major 59.2% drop from last weekend. Now in its fifth weekend, the film has surpassed its $45 million budget domestically alone, with a total of $51.6 million. Critics have panned the latest entry of the Karate Kid franchise, giving it a measly 59% on Rotten Tomatoes. Audiences, however, have embraced the film with open arms, awarding it a respectable 91%.

Despite F1 speeding to the top of the box office, week 26 of 2025 unfortunately saw the domestic box office top 10 decrease by 11.6% compared to week 26 of 2024, with $237.3 million brought in. The overall 54 domestic releases followed suit, dropping 14.4% from last year and bringing in $243.4 million.

International: Japan’s Kokuhô claimed the country’s number one box office spot for the first time in its third weekend of release. This impressive feat saw a 12.6% increase from the previous weekend and earned $3.5 million for the weekend of Saturday, June 21, 2025, to Sunday, June 22, 2025, bringing the film’s total gross up to $14.7 million.

After the film’s world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in May, Kokuhô was released shortly after in Japan on Friday, June 6, 2025. Set in post-war Japan, the story centers around the son of a Yakuza member who defies the expected path laid before him and becomes a gifted stage performer.

In Spain, Father There Is Only One 5 debuted number one at the box office during its opening weekend, earning $2.9 million from Friday, June 27, 2025, to Sunday, June 29, 2025. This also serves as the film's total gross, given its release was the day prior: Thursday, June 26, 2025.

F1 has raced to the top of multiple international box office markets. So far, its $144 million global gross has secured the film as an international hit.

Even on its sixth weekend, Lilo and Stitch continues to thrive globally. The film’s global gross sits just under the coveted $1 billion mark at $946 million and counting. Disney has also confirmed that a sequel to the live-action remake is in the works.

Streaming: For the week of Monday, June 15, 2025, to Sunday, June 22, 2025, Straw held onto the number one spot on Netflix globally for a third consecutive week. The film was viewed 20 million times and accrued a staggering 36 million watch hours. While engagement has been strong, the film has been met unenthusiastically by critics and audiences alike. Critics have panned the film, with a weak 52% showing on Rotten Tomatoes, while the audience score sits at a gentler 70%.

Netflix’s KPop Demon Hunters had a spectacular global debut, starting at a strong number two spot in its first week. The animated feature was viewed 9.2 million times, with 15.4 million hours watched. Released on a $70 million budget, the film is not only on its way to becoming a financial success, but is a hit with both audiences and critics, garnering a near-perfect 97% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes and an impressive 88% audience score.

Released on Friday, June 20, 2025, the animated feature follows a fictional, world-famous K-pop girl group who live secret double lives as demon hunters.

Among non-English titles, the French film K.O. continues to excel, spending its third week in Netflix’s non-English top 10 and its second consecutive week at number one on the list. The film brought in 6.8 million views and 9.9 million hours watched.

Released on Friday, June 6, 2025, K.O. follows a former fighter reconciling with the ghosts of his past as he battles a violent gang.

The Woman in the Yard had a relatively successful box office run earlier this year, garnering $23.3 million worldwide on a $12 million budget. Despite all-around negative reviews, with a 40% critic score and 47% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, the film is now available on Peacock as of Friday, June 27, 2025.

Streaming exclusively on Paramount+ and Nickelodeon on Wednesday, July 2, 2025, Dora and the Search for Sol Dorado is the sequel to the live-action feature Dora and the Lost City of Gold (2019).
