Receipts: ‘First Steps’ Steps Down From First; ‘KPop Demon Hunters’ Goes #1 On Hot 100
Domestic: Marvel’s latest release, The Fantastic Four: First Steps, dropped an unexpected 59.9% in its third weekend, falling from the coveted number one spot at the box office to third for the week of Friday, August 8, 2025, to Sunday, August 10, 2025. While the feature suffered a 52.7% drop from its opening weekend, it should be well on its way to recouping its reported $80 million budget, now sitting at $43.409 million earned overall domestically in just two weeks. Critics and audiences alike are loving the sequel, which currently sits at a stellar 87% critics' score and an even better 95% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.
Serving as a sequel to 2022’s highly popular The Bad Guys, the comedy from DreamWorks Animation brings back the familiar crew of reformed villains from the first film. The hijinks-loving team is still doing its best to avoid the temptations of evil, but they eventually come across the plot of a new, evil-loving group of delinquents, the Bad Girls, who pull the team into a heist that spans the entire globe.
Cruising into the eighth position is F1, dropping only a single spot and a meager 32.1% from last weekend. In the film’s seventh week of release, it continues to race through the box office, earning $2.835 million domestically across the weekend and bringing the feature’s domestic total to a respectable $178.581 million.
International: Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – The Movie: Infinity Castle was the top earner in Japan for the weekend of Saturday, August 2, 2025, to Sunday, August 3, 2025, earning a total of $16.666 million across the two days. The film is the latest installment in the highly popular Demon Slayer franchise, which has spawned multiple feature films. The newest story follows the Demon Slayer Corps as they head to the Infinity Castle for their final battle against the powerful Demon King, Muzan Kibutsuji (voiced by Toshihiko Seki).
In South Korea, My Daughter Is a Zombie dominated the nation’s box office for the weekend of Friday, August 1, 2025, to Sunday, August 3, 2025, earning $8.3 million across the three days and the top spot on the charts. The dramedy centers on animal trainer Lee Jeong Hwan (Jo Jung-suk) and his rebellious teen daughter Lee Soo-A (Choi Yoo-Ri), who becomes infected by a zombie amidst a worldwide virus. Soo-A, however, is the world’s last remaining zombie, and her father must embark on a mission to protect her at all costs.
Vietnam and South Korea’s co-production, Leaving Mom, dominated Vietnam’s box office, earning the country’s top spot and grossing $2.172 million across the weekend. The film tells the story of a poor street barber caught between caring for his Alzheimer’s-stricken mother and managing his own well-being. As his mother’s condition worsens, the barber brings his mother to South Korea in hopes that a distant half-brother will provide better care than he can.
Streaming: In no surprise, KPop Demon Hunters remains on Netflix’s Global Top 10 Movies list for the week of Monday, August 4, 2025, to Sunday, August 10, 2025. In its eighth consecutive week in the top 10, the film was watched 25.9 million times and accrued 43.1 million hours of viewing time, earning the second-place spot. Amid its massive popularity, the film is making headlines this week as it officially became Netflix’s fourth most popular English-language film of all time, and the stars of the film, fictional band Huntr/x, earned a number one single on the iconic Billboard Hot 100 list with “Golden.”
Now on Netflix, last year’s popular release, Gladiator II, came in at fifth on the list in its second consecutive week in the top 10. The film accrued 4.3 million views across 10.7 million hours of viewing time. While not as critically successful as its predecessor, 2000’s hit Gladiator, most critics and audiences have enjoyed the sequel, awarding it a 70% critics score and an 81% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Originally released in Indonesia on Monday, March 31, 2025, the narrative follows the hopeful employees of a rural sugar factory looking to land a seasonal position. A spirit, however, has taken over the factory, and a kingdom of demons unleashes terror on anyone who finds themselves in their path of destruction.
Thai crime thriller The Stone landed in the fifth position in its second week in the top 10, earning 1.4 million views and 2.9 million hours of viewing time. The film was released on Thursday, April 3, 2025, in Thailand, eventually having its US premiere later the same year in July at the New York Asian Film Festival. The feature follows Ake (Jaonaay Jinjett Wattanasin) as he desperately seeks the funds to cover his dying father’s medical expenses. With nowhere to turn, Ake takes his father’s coveted amulet for an appraisal, opening up a world of danger.
