Receipts: It’s A Billion Dollar Summer!
Domestic: Summer has been giving audiences back-to-back blockbusters, whether that be accidental successes or smash-hit sequels; there is no doubt that summer 2026 has been an amazing year for movie theaters nationwide. However, the July blockbusters arrived with record-breaking stats. Let's take a look at the numbers.
Toy Story 5 is currently the highest-grossing children’s film of 2026, sitting at about 1.11 billion dollars, dethroning the three-month reign of The Super Mario Galaxy Movie for the title. These numbers align perfectly with the influx of children out of school and into movie theaters for summer break. As a result, the film has become the highest-grossing film in the Toy Story franchise.
Moving on to Sony’s prodigal son, Spider-Man: Brand New Day is doing wonders at the box office. With a domestic opening weekend of about 360 million, this film has surpassed Avengers: Endgame as the biggest domestic opening weekend in history. The film has also swooped in and snagged the title of highest-grossing film of 2026. This could leave big questions on the desks of studio executives. What does this mean for the future of Tom Holland's Spider-Man? How many more films will audiences get out of his version? Unfortunately for audiences, these questions might not be answered for a while, as Marvel will soon be rolling out marketing for Avengers: Doomsday.
Even though Peter Parker did go through his own hero’s journey, we must discuss the story that started it all, The Odyssey, directed by none other than Christopher Nolan. This mega-epic film has been in theaters for about four weeks and has already surpassed 1 billion dollars worldwide, making it Christopher Nolan’s highest-grossing film to date. Judging by the success this film has created for Universal Pictures, it might be important for audiences to keep their eyes open for more epic-style films to be adapted for the big screen.
It seems like this summer is full of heroes and their stories because Hadestown: The Musical just released in theaters, and it’s having a very surprising run at the box office. The musical follows the old tale of Orpheus and Eurydice, telling the story of love, loss, and hope. The musical had a weekend opening of $10 million, surpassing Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Hamilton, and with an overall gross of $20 million, the film is the highest-grossing stage-to-theater capture in box office history. This is a huge success for Bleecker Street Media, the distributor, and might open doors for more theatre-to-stage captures in the future.
International: With domestic blockbusters taking all the attention from audiences, it's easy for films from our friends across the sea to get overshadowed. Let’s take a look at three films that stood out in their own way this summer.
Reading Lolita in Tehran is a book-to-film adaptation, originally written by Azar Nafisi. The book takes place in Iran after the revolution. The film grossed $1.5 million worldwide and has an 81% Tomatometer score on Rotten Tomatoes. This film is an exploration of the experiences of women who don’t have the liberty to read uncensored material, but do so despite the possible consequences.
The film Jana Nayagan is an Indian Tamil-language film full of action and drama, directed by H. Vinoth. This film follows Vetri Kondan, a former police officer, as he tries to fight political corruption, while also helping the daughter of his deceased friend face her fears and join the Indian Army. The themes of redemption, protection, and standing against injustice allow this film to stand tall in the hearts and minds of audiences.
Sheep in the Box is a Japanese science fiction drama starring Haruka Ayase and Daigo Yamamoto. The film premiered at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival, where it was considered for a Palme D’Or and received mixed reviews. The film is about a couple who welcomes a young boy into their home while still recovering from the loss of their son. Sheep in the Box is written, directed, and edited by Hirokazu Kore-eda and is a great exploration of dealing with loss.
Streaming: For the week of 8/3/26 - 8/9/26, there are two spotlight films that made their way to the Global Top 5. Let's take a look at the numbers.
The Debt Collector is a Thai action crime film directed by Surapong Ploensang and starring Nadech Kugimiya. The film centers around a former enforcer after being released from jail. As he is trying to navigate living a peaceful life, he gets caught up in saving a woman and her daughter from a dangerous loan shark. The film has spent the last two weeks in the Top 10, currently sitting in 2nd place.
Gatta Kusthi 2 is the second installment of the Indian Tamil-language sports-dramedy film written and directed by Chella Ayyavu. This film stars Vishnu Vishal and Aishwarya Lekshmi as a couple navigating the struggles of parenthood. This sequel adds a comedic touch to real themes of romantic fiction, domestic struggles, and reconciliation. This film has been in the Top Ten for the last two weeks and is currently sitting in 3rd place.
That’s a wrap on the numbers for now. There is still so much more that could unfold before summer ends, leaving room for any film, old or new, to swoop in and steal the audience's hearts. Whatever happens, trust this publication will be the first to run the numbers!
