Receipts: ‘One Battle After Another’ And ‘The Smashing Machine’ Disappoint At The Box Office
Domestic: In second place at the box office, which tracked earnings from Friday, October 3, 2025, to Sunday, October 5, 2025, is One Battle After Another. The newest feature from Paul Thomas Anderson dropped a spot from its debut last week, when it held the first position. Over the weekend, the film earned $11 million domestically, down 50% from last week, bringing its total domestic earnings to $42.626 million. Unfortunately, the film’s overwhelmingly positive reviews will not be enough to recover its reportedly steep $130 million to $175 million budget.
One Battle After Another follows Bob (Leonardo DiCaprio) and his daughter Willa (Chase Infiniti), who live off the grid after years of his work as a revolutionary. When Willa suddenly goes missing, Bob embarks on a journey to find Willa and confront his past. The film currently holds a near-perfect 95% critic score and an 85% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.
In third place is The Smashing Machine in its debut weekend. The film earned $6 million at the box office, which is deeply disappointing news considering the film reportedly cost around $50 million to make. However, not all news is bad, as the film has received mostly positive reviews, holding a 72% critic score and a 77% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.
Benny Safdie’s first solo-directed feature follows the true story of MMA fighter Mark Kerr (Dwayne Johnson), also known as “The Smashing Machine,” as his career reaches its peak. The film chronicles his career inside the cage and his life outside of it, particularly his tumultuous marriage to Dawn Staples (Emily Blunt).
In fourth place at the box office, down two spots from last week, is Gabby's Dollhouse: The Movie. The film grossed $5.324 million, down a steep 61.1% from its debut last weekend. The film’s total domestic gross is now $21.733 million, bringing it closer to earning back its $32 million budget. Audiences and critics alike have praised the film, awarding it an 82% critic score and a stellar 95% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.
Based on the hit animated Netflix series of the same name, Gabby's Dollhouse: The Movie follows the titular character, Gabby (Laila Lockhart Kraner), in her live-action debut. Gabby and her grandmother, Grandma Gigi (Gloria Estefan), set out on a road trip to Cat Francisco. Things take a turn, however, when Gabby’s dollhouse ends up in the wrong hands. Gabby then sets off on an adventure to reclaim her dollhouse and get the Gabby Cats back together.
International: Looking at the Japanese box office from Saturday, October 4, 2025, to Sunday, October 5, 2025, Chainsaw Man - The Movie: Reze Arc lands in first place. The highly popular anime film earned $6.080 million across its third weekend in Japan, up 13.7% from the previous weekend. The film has now accrued $29.642 million in Japan and will further expand its earnings when it opens in U.S. theaters on Friday, October 24, 2025.
One Battle After Another earned the top spot at the box office in both Italy and Switzerland over the weekend. The film’s Swiss debut earned the feature an additional $1.2 million from Wednesday, October 1, 2025, to Sunday, October 5, 2025. In its second weekend at the Italian box office, the film earned $1.274 million from Thursday, October 2, 2025, to Sunday, October 5, 2025. This is a 1.8% increase from its debut weekend, bringing the film’s total Italian gross to $3.124 million.
Streaming: Over on Netflix’s Global Top 10 English Movies list, KPop Demon Hunters still holds the number one spot in its 16th week in the top 10. The film earned 18.1 million views and was watched for 30.2 million hours from Monday, September 29, 2025, to Sunday, October 5, 2025.
In second place on the list is the Tyler Perry-produced Ruth & Boaz, in its second week in the top 10. The film earned 14.1 million views across 21.9 million hours of viewing time. Released on Netflix on Friday, September 26, 2025, the film is a reimagining of the biblical love story, which follows characters of the same name.
The modern interpretation follows Ruth (Serayah), a singer who decides to leave her music career behind in Atlanta and begin again in rural Tennessee. There, she meets Boaz (Tyler Lepley), who turns out to be the love of her life.
Karate Kid: Legends is third on the list in its first week in the top 10. Released earlier this year on Friday, May 30, 2025, the film has found a home on Netflix. Over the week, it accrued 3.9 million views across 6.1 million hours of viewing time.
On Netflix’s Global Top 10 Non-English Movies list, French Lover sits at the top of the list in first. This is the film’s second week in the top 10, after its release on Friday, September 26, 2025, and its first at number one, moving up a spot from last week. The film racked up 12.3 million views across an impressive 25 million hours of viewing time.
French Lover chronicles a love story in Paris between a worn-out actor, Abel (Omar Sy), and a struggling waitress, Marion (Sara Giraudeau). The question is whether the two’s connection can withstand the heat of the public eye.
Second on the Non-English list is Mantis, in its second week in the top 10. Following its release on Friday, September 26, 2025, the film accrued 6.8 million views, rising a spot on the list from last week and earning 12.8 million hours of viewing time.
Mantis follows the titular character, also known as Han-ul (Yim Si-wan), a top assassin who returns to his violent profession after a vacation. Upon his return, Mantis finds the previously familiar world turned upside down, and he must fight to claim the top assassin spot against other fierce competitors.
