The Receipts: 'Barbarian' Opens Strong Early Into Halloween Season; 'Brahmāstra Part One: Shiva' and 'Woman King' Struggle On Opening Weekend

Domestic: The Woman King debuted this weekend with $19.05 million in box office earnings. The film stars Viola Davis in a period piece based on true events depicting the fearsome strength of the Kingdom of Dahomey in 19th century Africa. With a budget of $50 million, the film is a box office flop. It has currently amassed $37.5 million in total gross with $1.5 million coming from international audiences. 

The horror film, Barbarian also opened this weekend with $10.5 million domestically. The film features Georgina Campbell and Bill Skarsgård as two renters who have double booked a sinister home. With a budget of $10 million, the film is a moderate success. It has currently gathered $29.9 million worldwide with $1.5 million drawn from international success. 

DC League of Super-Pets has become a moderate success at the box office, earning $185 million on a budget of $90 million. Starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Kevin Hart, the animated feature follows the lives of famous DC heroes’ pets. It continues to top the box office charts since its opening this past July. 

International: Brahmāstra Part One: Shiva had a domestic opening of $4.5 million. It grossed a total of $41 million and made $17.8 million locally in India. The film follows Shiva on his quest for love and identity as he fends off the evil forces of the universe with his newfound powers. Reports are unclear on the budget but it ballparks between $49 and $74 million USD, making its opening weekend a major loss. The team behind the project argues that the budget was an investment in the trilogy and the VFX assets designed to form the upcoming films. 

One Piece Film: Red has consistently raked in around $5 million per weekend since its opening on August 6th. Its opening weekend nabbed it $16.6 million in Japan. Since its worldwide debut, the film currently holds a gross of $111 million making it a box office success. 

Love Destiny: The Movie has grossed nearly $2.2 million USD since its opening on September 1st. The Vietnamese film is a spin-off of the popular romcom series of the same title. The entirety of its box office earnings come from the local area with no current worldwide release. 

Streaming: Netflix’s End of The Road tops the charts this week with 27 hours watched by users on the streaming service. The film stars Queen Latifah and Ludacris as parents protecting their children on a family vacation gone wrong. 

Netflix’s number 2 this week is another one of its originals titled Do Revenge. The film stars Camila Mendez and Maya Hawke as two students at a posh private school with a plan to exact revenge on their bullies. The film was watched by users for 26.6 million hours. 

Number 3 on Netflix’s charts this week is Love in the Villa, starring Kat Graham and Tom Hopper. It follows a woman’s vacation to Italy ruined when her villa is double booked by an attractive stranger.
