The Receipts: 'Black Adam' Scores The Rock’s Highest Box Office Open As Leading Man; 'Oldboy' Director Park Chan-Wook Debuts New Film 'Decision To Leave

Domestic: Black Adam was released this weekend, surging to $140 million worldwide. It’s still earning its investment back with a recorded budget of $195 million. Starring Dwayne ”The Rock” Johnson, the story follows a slave-turned-god seeking revenge after his family was murdered over 5,000 years ago. The DC superhero film is well on its way to becoming a box office success and is a notable milestone in the superstar’s career by being his largest opening weekend as the leading man. 

Lyle Lyle Crocodile was also released this October. With a budget of $50 million, the film has yet to make its money back, sitting at the box office at $37.1 million worldwide. The film follows a young boy that moves into a new home and discovers a goofy and fun-loving crocodile living in his attic. It stars Shawn Mendes and Constance Wu. 

David O. Russel’s Amsterdam also came out earlier this month. With a massive star-studded cast of Christian Bale, John David Washington, Margot Robbie, Rami Malek, Anya Taylor Joy, and Robert De Niro, the film opened with $6.3 million on its first weekend and has since risen to $21.8 million worldwide. With a budget of $80 million, the film is a sizeable box office flop. It was based on a true story of three friends working to solve a global conspiracy post World War 1.

International: Oldboy director Park Chan-Wook’s newest film Decision To Leave debuted this weekend. The murder mystery follows a homicide detective that begins to fall in love with his prime suspect. It has grossed a total of $17.2 million at the box office and continues to grow. 

The Japanese horror film Karada Sagashi debuted last weekend. A group of high school students are trapped in a time loop by a vengeful ghost. The film has grossed $1.4 million at the box office solely in Japan. It has no worldwide release as of now. 

On October 7th, The Divine Protector Master Salt Begins was released in Japan. Since then, it has earned $2.7 million worldwide and has rolled out to theaters in North America and Europe. The story follows an occult club at a high school that summons the mystical Master Salt to help solve mysterious and supernatural events. 

Streaming: Marlon Wayans’s The Curse Of Bridge Hollow is the number two movie domestically for Netflix. It has been watched for over 25 million hours. The story follows a family suffering from a curse that brings Halloween decorations to life. 

The number 1 international film on Netflix is Someone Borrowed, a Brazilian film about a young man hiring an actress to play his fiancé in order to remain in his dying mother’s will. The rom-com has been streamed for over 27 million hours worldwide. 

Taking the 3rd place for most watched television series on Netflix is K-drama Little Women. The series follows three sisters preyed upon in a web of conspiracy tied to the wealthy and powerful. It has been streamed for over 24 million hours.
