Cancellations and Renewals: 'Grey’s Anatomy' To Air Through 17th Season

Grey’s Anatomy - ABC

Grey’s Anatomy - ABC

When viewers flocked to streaming services like Netflix and Hulu, broadcast TV has been battling a crisis for years before the coronavirus pandemic. Lockdown trapped people indoors to explore television in its purest form—escapism—and presented a new challenge when live sports events are no longer possible. NBCUniversal launched Peacock, its streaming service, following other major media companies like Disney and AT&T’s WarnerMedia to enter the streaming war. However, broadcast TV still hauls a strong presence in television culture, with many established series running for years.

The universe of Grey’s Anatomy has been the audience’s favorite for the past sixteen seasons, which gave birth to another one of ABC's highest-rated series Station 19. It is no surprise that both series are renewed for a new season. However, Grey’s Anatomy has lost most of its original cast, with only Ellen Pompeo left as one of the series’ teams of interns. Will the carousel of Grey’s Anatomy keep turning after the seventeenth season, or will ABC shift gear to focus on developing the promising new series Station 19?

NBC’s Superstore is another series that lost its powerhouse. With America Ferrera leaving Superstore, the past season ended prematurely due to the pandemic without giving Ferrera a proper send-off. It is believed that she will appear in the first two episodes of the renewed season to say her goodbyes. “The possibility of bringing in a new character has come up, but we have no specific plans to do that yet,” co-showrunner Jonathan Green said during an interview with TVLine. Superstore’s new season is already off to a much-anticipated start.

Black-ish and Mixed-ish, another ABC franchise, suffered declining ratings in the past season. Both series were in the danger zone of cancellation before ABC announced their renewal. It is undeniable that Black-ish inherited the spirit of previous Black family sit-coms, also started many new conversations about what it means to be Black in America today. In the new season, Black-ish and Mixed-ish have the potential to dig deeper into those topics amidst the political atmosphere.

With the national outcry for police reform, a series about the police force will face the challenge of whether or not to address the systematic problem in the source of their inspiration. Series like NBC’s Brooklyn Nine-Nine and Chicago P.D. and CBS’s S.W.A.T. have all been renewed for the new season. This should be an opportunity for the television industry to adapt and support the ongoing call for police reform.

Over at CW, some exciting changes are coming. Ruby Rose starring in Batwoman created a cloud of excitement for the second female-led superhero series at CW, although the ratings did not live up to the expectation. After her exit, Javicia Leslie, from the canceled series God Friended Me, will put on the Batsuit and make history as a bisexual Black woman.
