Ratings Report: Greenleaf Comes Roaring Back

Broadcast: ABC’s Agents of Shield is taking the bus for one last ride, unfortunately the trip is decreasing viewership. The latest episode had 200,000 viewers in the 18-49 demographic, a 33.33 percent decrease from the week before. Agents of Shield averaged 1.386 total viewers in the past two weeks.

As the state of California entered its reopening from the pandemic, TV productions were scheduled to resume. However, amid record Coronavirus surge, Gov. Gavin Newsom ordered seven counties including Los Angeles to abandon reopening plans, including the reopening of bar, brewery or pub. It’s unknown if the order affected film and TV productions.

Due to the halted productions at the beginning of the pandemic, soap operas have been airing reruns of classic episodes. Bold and the Beautiful announced it will resume production on June 17, while General Hospital and Young and the Restless are planned to start filming after the 4th of July weekend.

Cable: On June 10, BET’s American Soul saw a spike in viewership with 160,000 in 18-49 demographic, a 45.45 percent increase form the week before. After that episode, the series has slowly declined an average of 145,000 in the 18-19 demo and 639,500 total viewers. Over at Showtime, The Chi had its season premiere to an underwhelming turnout, with 110,000 viewers in the 18-49 demographic (15.38 percent drop from season 2 premiere) and 348,000 total viewers (23.35 percent drop from season 2 premiere). After a surprising amount of viewership in its second episode, HBO’s I May Destroy You experienced a defeat of 25 percent drop to 60,000 viewers in the 18-49 demographic, and 31.88 percent drop to 156,000 viewers total viewership. OWN ended If Loving You Is Wrong’s five-season-long run, the series concluded on a positive note, with 210,000 viewers in the 18-49 demo, and 1.164 million total viewers, both slightly higher than the season average. Another OWN series that has been announced an ending is Greenleaf, which has its last season premiere to 310,000 viewers in the 18-49 demographic (19.23 percent higher than season 4 premiere) and 1.309 million total viewers (9.45 percent higher than season 4 premiere).

International: Korean Free-to-air average Nielsen TV ratings are as follow: Good Casting (SBS)-8.1%; Backstreet Rookie* (SBS)-5.4%; Kkondae Intern (MBC)-5.2%; Dinner Mate (MBC)-3.5; Soul Mechanic (KBS2)-1.8%.

Korean Cable TV ratings are as follow: It’s Okay to Not Be Okay* (tvN)-5.4%; King Maker: The Change of Destiny (TV Chosun)-5.1%; My Unfamiliar Family* (tvN)-3.7%; Mystic Pop-up Bar (JTBC)-3.1%; Team Bulldog: Off-duty Investigation (OCN)-2.8%; Oh My Baby (tvN)-1.7%; Sweet Munchies (JTBC)-0.6%.

In the past two weeks, over in the United Kingdom, Coronation Street averaged 6.783 million viewers, Emmerdale had 5.188 million viewers and Eastenders had 4.713 million viewers.

Streaming: A heart-warming spinoff from the popular film Love, Simon, Hulu Original Love, Victor tells a story of another closeted gay teenager in the same universe. The series fully lives up to being a teen drama, not missing out on the young adult angst and twists. Different from the film, Love, Victor centers around characters of color, but doesn’t quite digs into what that means. The series scored a soaring 96% with the audience on Rotten Tomatoes.
