Ratings Report: The Final Summer Report

Broadcast: Grand Hotel continues to keep the flame going despite fall having nearly arrived. Episode 12 suffered a 9.91 percent decrease from the previous episode ending with 2.236 million viewers. The summer finale only had a 2.86 percent decrease with a total of 2.172 million views. The conclusion of the first season leaves audiences with a big mysterious cliffhanger that begs committed viewers to show up for season 2.

OWN

Cable: Over the past couple of weeks, we’ve had to say a “goodbye, see you soon” to two signinficant shows: Ambitions and Queen Sugar. The return of OWN’s Ambitions has yet to be determined and much of that may be due to its ratings performance. Its average overall viewership for season one is 820,000. If we take a look at the season premiere, the show had 1.179 million views. The season finale had 791,000 views. The show saw a drastic decline in viewership just after episode 3. It was not able to achieve anything close to its season premiere metric. OWN’s Ambition may face a tough road to renewal.

Conversely, Own’s Queen Sugar has been met with great success and praise. The average viewership for season 4 is 1.045 million viewers. The season premiere had 1.016 million. The finale had a whopping 1.095 million viewers. It is always a great thing when a season finale has more viewers than the overall average. It has been confirmed that Queen Sugar will be renewed. This is no surprise due to the show’s ratings performance. The Ava Duvernay fronted show has consistently been one of the networks front runners in viewership and critical praise. It is the first show to have every episode directed by female directors. This goes to show the viability of breaking common practice and investing to a more diverse set of talent.

SBS

International: Television dramas in Korea have had a slight increase in viewership over the past two weeks. The top shows in Terrestrial TV (KBS2, MBC, SBS) are as follows: Doctor John-7.8%, Golden Garden-7.3%, Justice-5.6%, Rookie Historian Goo Hae-Ryung-4.7%, Welcome 2 Life-4.5%, Doctor Detective-3.6%, I Wanna Hear Your Song-2.9%.

The top cable TV (JTBC, OCN, tvN) are: Arthdal Chronicles-6.3%, Class Of Lies: 4.5%, Moment At Eighteen-3.7%, Strangers From Hell-3.1%, The Great Show-2.8%, When The Devil Calls Your Name-1.4%, and Be Melodramatic-1.4%.

Streaming: September 13th saw the premiere of two big series: Amazon’s Undone and Netflix’s Top Boy. Both shows opened to critical praise, but ratings metrics have yet to be released. They both currently hold 100 percent on Rotten Tomatoes. These are two unique shows that are not to be missed.
