Screen Share Report: Lisa Yamada Tops August Episode Counts

Lisa Yamada - cbS

The CBS Soap Opera Beyond the Gates leads in on-screen representation for actors of color, which doesn’t come as a surprise considering its predominantly African American cast. The series is the first Daytime Drama to feature a predominately African American cast since NBC’s Generations (1989-91), and the first new Daytime Drama to debut on Network Television since Passions (1999-2008), also on NBC. Throughout the month of August, fellow CBS Soap Opera The Bold and the Beautiful also stood out for its representation of people of color. Contract actress Lisa Yamada (Luna Nozawa) appeared in 15 out of 21 episodes during the month.

ABC’s General Hospital, meanwhile, has the second highest number of actors of color, either on contract or recurring status, with fifteen actors in total. However, both soaps fall behind in monthly representation of people of color, along with The Young and the Restless on CBS. The 52-year-old soap’s cast lineup features eight actors of color (6 on contract, 2 recurring), tying it with The Bold and the Beautiful for featuring the fewest actors of color in the cast. This data suggests that while The Bold and the Beautiful may feature its people of color cast members more frequently, there is still space for them to include more diversity in their cast. Additionally, while General Hospital has the second highest number of actors of color, the soap can still do a better job of featuring people of color more prominently on screen.

Beyond the Gates: On the youngest soap opera currently airing on daytime television, and the first to feature a predominately African American cast in over 30 years, Beyond the Gates featured five contract actors of color who tied for having the most appearances in August. Tamara Tunie (Anita Dupree), Daphnée Duplaix (Nicole Dupree Richardson), Karla Mosley (Dani Dupree Hamilton), Trisha Mann-Grant (Dana Thomas), and Arielle Prepetit (Naomi Hamilton Hawthorne), each appeared in 14 episodes, out of a total of 21 for August. Recurring actress Kenjah (Madison) appeared in 11 episodes during the month of August, the most of all recurring actors on the show, tying her with contract actress RhonniRose Mantilla (Chelsea Hamilton.) Meanwhile, contract actor Alex Alegria (Tomas Navarro) made the fewest appearances in August out of all the contract performers of color, appearing in six episodes. Alegria tied with recurring actress of color Brianna Roberts (Allison), who also appeared in six episodes during the month.

The Bold and the Beautiful: The contract performer of color with the most on-screen appearances in August on The Bold and the Beautiful was Lisa Yamada (Luna Nozawa), who appeared in 15 episodes out of 21 in the month. Interestingly, Yamada appeared in more episodes in August than any performer of color on all five daytime dramas, including the predominately African American-led Beyond the Gates. Meanwhile, contract actress Murielle Hilarie (Daphne Rose), only made one on-screen appearance in August. Yamada continues her streak, as she was also the performer of color with the most on-screen appearances in July. Recurring actress Naomi Matsuda (Li Finnegan) appeared in 12 out of 21 episodes and appeared in more episodes than any other recurring performer of color, and all contract performers of color other than Yamada.

vernee watson - abc

General Hospital: On General Hospital, the longest running soap opera currently in production in the United States, contract actor Donnell Turner (Curtis Ashford) and recurring actress Vernee Watson (Stella Henry) were the performers of color with the most screen time in August, appearing in 10 out of 21 total episodes. These figures leave room for improvement on the sole remaining ABC soap, as Turner and Watson still appeared in less than half of the episodes during the month. Turner and Watson also tied with Adrian Anchondo (Marco Rios) for being the performers of color with the most screen time in a single month, as Anchondo appeared in 10 episodes in July. Jens Austin Astrup (Kai Taylor) appeared in only two episodes, less than any other performer of color who was featured on the daytime drama in August.

Zuleyka Silver - cbs

The Young and the Restless: On the Young and the Restless, currently the highest rated soap opera in the United States for more than 30 years, contract actress Zuleyka Silver (Audra Charles) was the performer of color with the most screen time in August, appearing in 10 episodes out of 21 for the month. Silver appeared in less episodes in August than co-star Christel Khalil (Lily Winters) appeared in July; the actress appeared in 11 out of the 23 episodes that aired in July. While Silver appeared in more episodes than her co-stars of color in August, she still appeared in less than half of the month’s episodes. This data suggests that CBS soap still has work to do with their representation of people of color. Contract actress Mishael Morgan (Amanda Sinclair) made the least on-screen appearances in August, with only one episode.
