Flynn will play Jake Gibson, a “quietly confident former amateur boxer with a dark past” who gains Truck 51’s attention after a heroic act. Announcement of his addition follows news of Alberto Rosende and Kara Killmer leaving the series, making their final appearances in season 12. Production is expected to resume in the beginning of 2024, and plot and character details are still secret. All that is known is that the series takes place on Earth in the not-too-distant future.

Kate Del Castillo and Santiago Cabrera will join Fox’s The Cleaning Lady for season three as series regulars. Based on the Argentine hit, the series follows Thony De La Rosa (Elodie Yung), a Cambodian doctor. De La Rosa comes to the U.S. seeking medical treatment for her son, but when the system fails her, she takes matters into her own hands, becoming entwined in the criminal underbelly of Las Vegas. Del Castillo will play Ramona Sachez, the graceful, cunning matriarch of the Sanchez crime family who hides many dark secrets behind a philanthropic front. Cabrera will portray Ramona’s brother, Jorge, a shrewd businessman who balances laundering money for his family with protecting his daughter at all costs after his wife’s death. “a deadly, sociopathic young agent assigned to kill David Jung (Kim) an enigmatic, highly unpredictable former U.S. intelligence operative living in South Korea, whose life is blown to pieces when the consequences of an impossible decision from his past come back to haunt him.”

Rebecca distances herself from her emotions to cope with past traumas but is nonetheless charismatic and lively. Hardesty is also in Brockmire and the CW’s The Flash, and will appear in the film It’s What’s Inside. She is represented by Gersh, Authentic, Goodman Genow Schenkman, and Smelkinson & Christopher, LLP.

Twisted Metal, the half-hour, live action series based on the Playstation game series, was renewed for a second season on Peacock. Michael Jonathan Smith showruns, writes, and executive produces the series, which was developed by Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, the minds behind Deadpool and Zombieland. The series follows:

“a motor-mouthed outsider who’s offered a chance at a new life, but only if he can successfully deliver a mysterious package across a post-apocalyptic wasteland. With the help of an axe-wielding car thief, he faces seedy individuals driving damage-inducing vehicles and other dangers of the open road.”

Twisted Metal was the most binged original on Peacock in its first week and remains among the top three Peacock originals of all time. Anthony Mackie and Will Arnett executive produce and star alongside Stephanie Beatriz, Thomas Haden Church, and Joe Seanoa.

Lamorne Morris will join season two of Netflix’s Unstable. This comedy series centers on Ellis Dragon (Rob Lowe), an eccentric and narcissistic biotech entrepreneur, and his estranged son Jackson (John Owen Lowe), who steps up to save his father’s company despite their conflicting personalities. Morris will play recurring guest character Peter, a charismatic, up-and-coming biotech start-up founder who stokes the rivalry between Ellis and Jackson. Iris Apatow is also set to join the second season. Until then, Morris can be seen in the fifth installment of Noah Hawley’s Fargo. Morris is represented by CAA, Entertainment 360, The Lede Company, and Myman Greenspan Fox Rosenberg Mobasser Younger & Light.

The trailer for Prime’s new series Mr. and Mrs. Smith begins with awkward small talk that escalates from “come here often?” to “So, you ever killed anyone?” Right away the tone is set for a spy thriller with dry wit. Donald Glover and Maya Erskine star as the central spy couple, fumbling their way through acquaintances' questions about their intimacy as well as hefting dead bodies into tubs. Plenty of guns, explosions, and bloody faces combine with admissions that they make up their missions and relationship as they go along. Even in a short trailer, Glover and Erskine’s charm and chemistry shine through. Mr. and Mrs. Smith drops on Amazon Prime Video on February 2nd.

Amanda Warren joins Netflix’s hit series The Night Agent as a series regular. Based on Matthew Quirk’s novel, the conspiracy action thriller follows FBI agent Peter Sutherland (Gabriel Basso) as he gets sucked into a dangerous conspiracy that goes all the way to the Oval Office. Alongside Basso and Luciane Buchanan, Warren will star as Catherine Weaver,

“a veteran of the top-secret Night Action investigative program, who trains and oversees various Night Agents, including Basso’s new recruit, Sutherland. Smart, private and determined, Catherine is a fierce defender of her agents, but finds it difficult to earn Peter’s trust when he struggles with betrayal issues from his experiences in Season 1.”

The series is sixth on Netflix’s most popular TV chart and boasted 168.7 million hours viewed in its first few days, set up for a second season after less than a week. Warren also starred in the legal drama The Burial opposite Jamie Foxx and CBS’ cop drama East New York; she has appeared in Madam Secretary, The Leftovers, and Dickinson. Warren is represented by Alchemy Entertainment, Buchwald, and Ginsberg Daniel Kallis.

The trailer for Netflix’s new action comedy The Brothers Sun dropped. The series follows as Bruce (Sam Song Li), the son of a Taiwanese triad family sheltered from knowledge of the gang until now, must join forces with his hardened killer brother Charles (Justin Chien) to save his family from a rival gang. Michelle Yeoh features as the matriarch. Comedy flows from Bruce’s naivety and desire to return to his mundane life. In the trailer he complains, “I don’t want to be a gangster. What if I just want to do what I want?” to which a gangster replies, “We have a word for that in Taiwan: American.” Foiling Bruce’s squeamishness are lavish shootouts and martial arts. In a clash of worlds, the trailer depicts a man stabbing someone in a dinosaur costume before kicking them into a swimming pool. Viewers can check out the gratuitous violence, underdog hero, and the glorious Michelle Yeoh in The Brothers Sun on Netflix on January 4th.

Amazon Prime Video’s Harlem is set to return for season three. Created by Tracy Oliver (Girls Trip, The Blackening), the series follows Camille (Meagan Good), Tye (Jerrie Johnson), Quinn (Grace Byers), and Angie (Shoniqua Shandai), best friends in Harlem figuring out their dreams, careers, and relationships together. Amy Poehler and Pharrell Williams are among Harlem’s executive producers, with Amazon MGM Studios and Universal Television producing. Head of television at Amazon MGM Studios Vernon Sanders commented,

Harlem has continued to tell outrageously hilarious stories through the perspective of these uniquely special characters. Fans can look forward to more laughs, wit and cultural commentary from the brilliant mind of Tracy Oliver and the amazing cast, Meagan, Grace, Jerrie and Shoniqua… This critically acclaimed series has been embraced by so many and it is a privilege to bring season three to our global Prime Video customers.”

Apple TV+’s Swagger is canceled after two seasons. Produced by CBS Studios and created by Reggie Rock Bythewood, the series is inspired by NBA star Kevin Durant, who executive produced; it explored youth basketball, dreams, corruption, and growing up in America. Bythewood thanked the creative team, producers, and fans in an Instagram post, saying,

“Apple, while you are not ordering a season three, I made the show I wanted to make. Thank you for that… For our FAMbase, you lifted us in ways we could have never imagined. To the industry, don’t take your foot off the gas. Keep telling our stories.”

The show starred O’Shea Jackson Jr., Isaiah Hill, Shinelle Azoroh, Christina Jackson, Quvenzhané Wallis, Caleel Harris, Tristan Mack Wilds, Orlando Jones, Tessa Ferrer, and Jason Rivera.

Godfather of Harlem was renewed for a 10-episode season four on MGM+. Co-created by Chris Brancato and Paul Eckstein, who passed unexpectedly this past summer, and starring Forest Whitaker, season four will follow:

“Bumpy Johnson (Whitaker) as he continues his bloody war for control of Harlem against New York’s Mafia families, while contending with the emergence of a potential rival in newly arrived Black gangster Frank Lucas. After Malcolm X’s (Jason Alan Carvell) tragic death, Bumpy must also grapple with his daughter Elise’s (Antoinette Crowe-Legacy) involvement with the Black Panthers.”

Recurring cast members include Ilfenesh Hadera, Lucy Fry, Antoinette Crowe-Legacy, and Erik LaRay Harvey. Godfather of Harlem is MGM+’s No. 1 all-time acquisition driver for subscriptions and one of its top performing original series. Production will begin next year in New York.

Anna Lambe and Keira Cooper will star in an untitled Netflix, CBC, and APTN comedy series, with Anya Adams as producing director. The 10-part Canadian comedy follows:

“Siaja (Lambe) as a young Inuk mother who wants to build a new future for herself, but finds that tough in a small Arctic town where everybody knows her business. Cooper will make an on-screen debut as her daughter, Bun.”

Inuit writer and producer Stacey Aglok MacDonald and Inuit filmmaker Alethea Arnaquq-Baril helm the series. Lambe is an Inuk actress appearing in the upcoming season of HBO’s cop drama True Detective. She received a Canadian Screen Award nomination for Best Actress in a Supporting Role for her debut film, The Grizzlies. Adams is a Canadian-American director whose work includes Ginny & Georgia, Black-ish, and the second season of Yellowjackets. She recently received an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Fiction Special for her debut feature Prom Pact. Filming for their unnamed series will begin in spring 2024 in Nunavut, Canada.

Simone Missick is set to lead Apple TV+’s upcoming dramedy Government Cheese. The series stars David Oyelowo, who also executive produces. He and his wife Jessica recently closed a first-look deal with Apple TV+ to develop and produce for the streamer. Government Cheese follows ex-con Hampton Chambers as he tries to win back his family, all while processing increasing moments of divine intervention. Missick will play Chambers’ wife Astoria. Missick is best known as Misty Knight in Marvel’s Luke Cage and most recently starred as Lola Carmichael in the legal drama All Rise.

Industry: Terrence Howard, who starred as music mogul Lucious Lyon in the Fox drama Empire, is suing CAA for a breach of fiduciary duty. Filing the suit on December 8th in the Los Angeles Superior Court, Howard alleges the agency asked him to take a lower salary for the series. CAA also represented the producers of Empire in a package deal, and Howard asserts the agency didn’t push for a higher salary because it had a profit participation stake through its package. The argument goes that instead of maximizing the 10% of Howard’s compensation agents would receive, the agency was more interested in the overall profit of the series. Howard commented,

“I can’t say for certain this was a racial issue, but I can’t imagine another counterpart — a white counterpart — with the same accolades, name recognition and numbers that I had, receiving the lowball pay that I was receiving.”

The actor points toward the fact that he was paid less than stars Jim Parsons (The Big Bang Theory), Jon Hamm (Mad Men), and Kevin Spacey (House of Cards), despite Empire having a larger viewership than any of their shows. The packaging fees at the heart of Howard’s allegations were effectively banned in 2020 — the final year of Empire’s run — after WGA’s two-year war against the decades-old practice.

A class action lawsuit alleging Disney paid 9,000 women less than their male counterparts was certified on December 8th. Judge Elihu M. Berle certified the case, the largest ever under California’s Equal Pay Act, which makes it illegal for workers to be paid less for substantially the same work based on gender. The class of the case includes female Disney employees who worked for the company since April 1st, 2015 in non-union positions below the level of vice president, and who were assigned to a job family and level. The class covers units from the Disneyland theme park to Lucasfilm, but does not cover the Disney properties Pixar, ESPN, Hulu, Fox, or FX. Lori Andrus will represent the plaintiffs. Disney’s attorney for the case, Felicia Davis, argued the case would be too sprawling to possibly manage, and that plaintiffs are comparing salaries across thousands of job groups, reflecting the decentralized decisions of thousands of managers. Nonetheless, Berle certified the case, for which a status conference is scheduled on February 9th. The trial is expected to be held sometime before October.

Adrian Gonzalez was promoted to agent at Culture Creative Entertainment. The nascent talent agency was founded by former Abrams Artists Agency agents Brad Rosenfeld, Paul Weitzman, and Karen Kirkland. Kirkland set up the company in July 2019; he signed the WGA’s new franchise agreement during the standoff between the union and the Association of Talent Agents and avoided being one of the agents fired by over 7,000 writers. Gonzalez joined Culture Creative Entertainment as an intern, worked on Kirkland’s desk, and was promoted to Literary Coordinator a year later. Kirkland, Rosenfeld, and Weitzman commented,

“We’re ecstatic to promote Adrian. His passion for our industry coupled with his strong work ethic will serve him well as he embarks on this journey to bring new voices to the agency.  We couldn’t be prouder of his elevation to agent.”

Kimiko Glenn, who played inmate Brook Soso on Netflix’s Orange is the New Black, signed with Artists First for management. Her breakout series, which centered a minimum-security women’s prison, won three Screen Actors Guild awards for Outstanding Ensemble in a Comedy Series. She’s also tackled voice work and Broadway, voicing Peni Parker in the Spider-Verse franchise and debuting in the Broadway musical adaptation of Waitress in 2016. Glenn continues to be represented by Buchwald and Jackoway Austen Tyerman.

Sony Pictures Entertainment, Amazon MGM Studios, and NBCUniversal will sponsor this year’s Writers’ Access Support Staff Training Program. The companies pledged financial support for the program and to consider graduates for available staffing slots on their series. The Writers Guild Foundation initiative helps TV writers who are of color, have a disability, identify as LGBTQIA+, or are over the age of 50 become writers’ assistants and script coordinators. The program consists of a 12-week course taught by veteran script coordinators; by the end, participants’ experience level is equivalent to working as a writers’ assistant or script coordinator on one season of television. Since its launch in 2021, alums joined staffs on shows including A Black Lady Sketch Show, Manifest, and The Sex Lives of College Girls, and three have gone on to become staff writers. WGF Director of Community Programs Kira VandenBrande commented,

“Graduates of the 2023 program represent a broad range of life experiences and identities that contribute to their unique voices in the writers’ room. They are united in their resourcefulness, adaptability and expertise… With the support of Sony, Amazon, and NBCU, graduates will take the first steps towards building a sustainable career in entertainment.”

The British poet, writer, and actor Benjamin Zephaniah died at age 65. Zephaniah is perhaps best recognized for his role as Jeremiah Jesus over six seasons of Peaky Blinders. He published 13 more books of poetry, often tackling political subjects from the British legal system to the situation in Palestine. Zephaniah also wrote several novels and plays and appeared in EastEnders, The Bill, and Zen Motoring. Zephaniah died on December 7th, eight weeks after he was diagnosed with a brain tumor. Peaky Blinders star Cillian Murphy paid tribute, saying,

“Benjamin was a truly gifted and beautiful human being — a generational poet, writer, musician and activist. A proud Brummie and a Peaky Blinder. I’m so saddened by this news. RIP.”

Before founding Juniper, Shah was head of current affairs and political programmes for the BBC. He received a royal honor for services to television and heritage in 2019. The previous chair, Richard Sharp, stepped down after failing to disclose his role in the attempts of former prime minister Boris Johnson to secure a loan. Since the BBC is a public service broadcaster, before being officially appointed, Shah will appear before the Culture, Media, and Sport committee in the U.K. for “pre-appointment scrutiny” before taking the role. The U.K.’s culture secretary Lucy Frazer announced Shah’s upcoming appointment.

Peacock premium will soon be available to all subscribers of Instacart+ in the U.S. at no additional cost. NBCUniversal has not shared the terms of the deal, but a per-subscription fee from Instacart at a wholesale rate is expected. This unconventional partnership may allow Instacart — a subscription-based grocery delivery service — to differentiate itself from competitors such as Amazon and FreshDirect. Instacart’s vice president of strategy, partnerships, and corporate development explained the team-up, saying,

“Instacart+ helps deliver all of the snacks and beverages a Peacock viewer needs for a must-see TV night. An hour saved on a trip to the store means an hour more of fan-favorite shows from Peacock.”

According to NBCUniversal, Instacart is a regular advertiser across Peacock and the company’s TV portfolio, including Bravo, CNBC, E!, and Today. Those who buy into the deal can look forward to upcoming Peacock titles including exclusive NFL games and the limited series Apples Never Fall, starring Annette Bening and Sam Neill.

Actor Andre Braugher’s cause of death was revealed as lung cancer, which he was only recently diagnosed with. When Braugher passed on December 11th at the age of 61, it was merely announced he died due to a “brief illness.” Braugher is best known for his roles in NBC’s Homicide: Life on the Street, for which he won an Emmy, and Fox’s Brooklyn Nine-Nine, for which he was Emmy nominated. His Brooklyn Nine-Nine costar Terry Crews said in a social media post,

“Can’t believe you’re gone so soon. I’m honored to have known you, laughed with you, worked with you and shared 8 glorious years watching your irreplaceable talent. This hurts. You left us too soon.”
