Screenshare Report: Daphnée Duplaix Leads In Representation

cbs

The CBS soap opera Beyond the Gates has been a leader in representation for people of color since its February 2025 debut. Daytime’s newest drama, 15 months into its debut, exceptionally portrays people of color as three-dimensional, compelling characters. Beyond the Gates is the first soap opera to debut in the United States since Passions (1999-2008), and the first soap opera to star a predominantly African-American cast since Generations (1989-1991), both of which aired on NBC.

ABC’s General Hospital, the longest-running American soap opera in production, boasts a healthy presence of 13 actors of color in its cast. Meanwhile, Peacock’s Days of Our Lives, which formerly aired on NBC, features 12 actors of color, eight of whom are on contract. On the other hand, CBS soaps The Young and the Restless and The Bold and the Beautiful fall significantly behind their competitors in representation for people of color.

Jordi Veluso, with seven episodes, was featured more than any recurring and several contract performers of color on Beyond the Gates. Recurring performers Karan Kendrick (Mona Wilson), Destiny Love (Laura Peterson), and Carlos Palacio (Diego Sánchez) weren’t featured in April.

Murielle Hilarie - cbs

The Bold and the Beautiful: Contract actress Murielle Hilaire (row and Rose Walton) was featured in 10 out of 22 episodes, topping episode counts for actors of color in April. Hillaire topped episode counts for the third time in a row, and significantly improved on her figures from both February and March. Meanwhile, recurring actors Dan Martin (Lieutenant Bradley Baker) and Naomi Matsuda (Li Finnegan) didn’t make any appearances on The Bold and the Beautiful in April. With eight actors of color in its cast, The Bold and the Beautiful ranks just above The Young and the Restless in representation for people of color. These figures suggest the nearly four-decade-old soap has room to improve regarding representation.
