The CBS soap opera Beyond the Gates, which celebrates its first anniversary this week, started 2026 strong. The series is the first soap opera to feature a predominantly African-American cast since Generations (1989-1991) and the first of its genre to debut in the United States since Passions (1999-2008). Throughout January, Beyond the Gates continued its legacy as the gold standard for representation of people of color on daytime television.

Peacock’s Days of Our Lives has a healthy, yet modest, presence of 11 people of color in its cast, nine of whom are under contract. Meanwhile, ABC’s General Hospital, the longest-running American soap opera in production, features over a dozen actors of color in its cast, but several of these actors haven’t appeared in months. At the same time, CBS’s The Young and the Restless and The Bold and the Beautiful both feature the fewest people of color in their casts, with just six actors.

Beyond the Gates: Contract actress Karla Mosley (Dani Dupree-Richardson) made more appearances than any actor of color across all five soap operas in January. Mosley was featured in 17 out of the month’s 21 episodes, topping her December 2025 totals, when she also topped episode counts. Impressively, Mosley also topped episodes from August to October 2025.

Ambyr Michelle (Eva Thomas) appeared in only six episodes in January, fewer than any contract actor of color on Beyond the Gates. Her figures come as somewhat of a surprise, considering Michelle recently topped episode counts in November 2025, with 16 appearances. Unfortunately, Michelle’s numbers continue a downward trend for the actress, who went from 10 episodes in December to only six in January.

Lawrence St. Victor - cbs

The Bold and the Beautiful: Continuing his success from the previous month, contract actor Lawrence St. Victor (Carter Walton) appeared in 10 out of 21 episodes in January, more than any actor of color on The Bold and the Beautiful. The actor builds on his December 2025 totals, when he appeared in eight episodes. Contract actress Murielle Hilaire (Daphne Rose) trailed closely behind, with eight appearances. On the other hand, recurring actress Naomi Matsuda (Dr. Li Finnegan) appeared in just two episodes in January. These three actors were the only performers of color in their cast to appear on The Bold and the Beautiful in January.

Contract actors Delon de Metz (Zende Forrester Dominguez), Romy Park (Poppy Nozawa), and recurring actor Dan Martin (Lieutenant Bradley Baker) didn’t make any appearances in January. These numbers are becoming a trend for Park and Martin, both of whom haven’t appeared since November 2025. These factors, combined with the soap’s general lack of diversity, leave several opportunities for improvement of representation for people of color on The Bold and the Beautiful.

Tabyana Ali - ABC

General Hospital: On ABC’s General Hospital, contract actress Tabyana Ali (Trina Robinson) appeared in 11 episodes of 20 in January, more than any performer of color on the soap. This figure places her below December 2025 screen-time leader Donnel Turner (Curtis Ashford), who appeared in 14 out of 21 episodes that month. Ali also clocked less screen time than her December total of 13 episodes.

Contract actors Tanisha Harper (Jordan Ashford) and Sawandi Wilson (Dr. Isaiah Gannon) tied for the fewest appearances among actors of color, with only 3 episodes each. Meanwhile, recurring actors Dioni Michelle Collins (Deanna Sirtis), Robert Gossett (Marshall Ashford), and Cassandra James (Dr. Terry Randolph) didn’t appear in January. Gossett last appeared on screen in December 2025, while Collins and James haven’t appeared in several months.

Zuleyka sliver - CBS/Sony

The Young and the Restless: Contract actress Zuleyka Silver (Audra Charles) appeared in five episodes of The Young and the Restless in January, more than any performer of color on the soap. Silver previously topped episode counts in December 2025, when she appeared in 8 episodes. Meanwhile, contract actress Christel Khalil (Lily Winters) appeared in only one episode in January. This is far below her December 2025 total of six episodes, and ties her with recurring actress Valarie Pettiford (Amy Lewis) for making the fewest appearances in January. Based on these numbers, The Young and the Restless falls far behind its competitors in representation for people of color.
