Screen Share Report: Karla Mosley Tops episode counts; ‘The Young and the restless’ slips with representation
Karla Mosley - Sonja Flemming/CBS
Throughout October, CBS's Beyond the Gates continued to lead in representation, with a notable increase in screen time for people of color, as expected. The series debuted in February and is the first new Soap Opera to premiere in the United States since NBC’s Passions (1999-2008). Before Beyond the Gates, the last American daytime drama to feature a predominantly Black cast was another NBC Soap Opera, Generations (1989-91).
Meanwhile, The Young and the Restless has consistently featured fewer performers of color month to month. The eye network’s oldest soap only has nine people of color in its cast, only more than eight on The Bold and the Beautiful. At the same time, ABC’s General Hospital, the longest-running American Soap Opera in production, has the most performers of color who don’t make any appearances in a particular month. For example, five of the soap’s recurring performers of color didn’t make any appearances in October, and most of them haven’t been seen in several months. However, General Hospital still has the second largest number of people of color in its cast, after Beyond the Gates.

Beyond the Gates: Contract actress Karla Mosley (Dani Dupree Hamilton) was featured more than any performer of color, not just on Beyond the Gates, but all Soap Operas currently in production. Mosley appeared in 17 episodes of 23 in October. She beats her own record, having appeared in 11 episodes in September, when she tied with two of her co-stars for the most episodes of any performer of color. Further, Mosley has dominated episode counts on Beyond the Gates since August.
Clifton Davis (Vernon Dupree) was featured in only six episodes out of the 23 that aired in October. This figure is lower than that of any contract performer of color in the cast and is also lower than that of some recurring cast members of color. Additionally, Clifton made the same number of appearances in September. Significantly, recurring actress Najah Jackson (Samantha Richardson) appeared in nine episodes over the month, more than any recurring and several contract performers of color. Meanwhile, recurring actors Jason Graham (Douglas McBride) and Arle Michel (Peaches) both appeared in only one episode during the month, fewer than any performer of color on Beyond the Gates.

Lisa Yamada - CBS
The Bold and the Beautiful: Contract actress Lisa Yamada (Luna Nozawa) once again topped episode counts on The Bold and the Beautiful, an accomplishment she has enjoyed for several months. Yamada appeared in 13 episodes out of 23 in October, albeit down from her September record of 19 episodes, when she appeared more than any actor in the soap’s cast. Meanwhile, contract actress Romy Park (Poppy Nozawa) appeared in three episodes throughout the month, fewer than any contract or recurring performer of color on The Bold and the Beautiful. Significantly, contract actor Delon de Metz (Zende Forrester Dominguez) and recurring actor Dan Martin (Lieutenant Bradley Baker) didn’t appear in October.

Raven Bowens - Peacock
Days of Our Lives: On Peacock’s Days of Our Lives, contract actress Raven Bowens (Chanel DiMera) appeared more than any performer of color on the daytime drama, being featured in 10 out of 23 episodes in October. This figure marks a change in screen time trends, as Rachel Boyd (Sophia Choi) and Cherie Jimenez (Gabi DiMera) have flip-flopped over several months for being the performer of color with the most screen time. Additionally, Bowen builds upon the September figures for Boyd, who appeared in eight episodes that month.
Significantly, Jimenez appeared in fewer episodes than any contract performer of color on the 60-year-old soap, with only three episodes. This is a drastic change from her previous monthly figures, when she was featured in more episodes than any performer of color or ranked right below co-star Boyd. Lastly, recurring actress Tina Huang (Melinda Trask) appeared in only one episode in October, while recurring actor George Del Hoyo (Orpheus) didn’t appear at all.

Brook kerr - abc
General Hospital: Contract actress Brook Kerr (Portia Robinson) continues her streak as the performer of color with the most monthly appearances on General Hospital. Kerr appeared in 11 episodes out of a total of 21 in October, down from 12 in September. Recurring actress Nazneen Contractor (ADA Turner) appeared in five episodes throughout October, the most of any recurring performer of color on the soap.
Meanwhile, five recurring actors of color didn’t make appearances in October: Dioni Michelle Collins (Deanna Sirtis), Cassandra James (Dr. Terry Randolph), Lydia Look (Selina Wu), Marc Samuel (Felix DuBois), and Parry Shen (Brad Cooper). Most of these actors appear very infrequently, and some haven’t appeared in several months, although they are still listed as recurring cast members. This data is concerning, as three of these actors are Asian-American and one of them is a trans woman playing a transgender character, and General Hospital is lacking representation in this category.

Zuleyka silver and Sean Dominic - CBS
The Young and the Restless: On CBS’s The Young and the Restless, contract actress Zuleyka Silver (Audra Charles) was featured in more episodes than any performer of color, appearing in six episodes out of 23 throughout October. This figure is below any performer of color on the other four soaps. Additionally, contract actor Bryton James (Devon Winters) and recurring actress Valerie Pettiford (Amy Lewis) appeared in just two episodes, fewer than any contract or recurring performer of color. Meanwhile, recurring actress Veronica Redd (Mamie Johnson) didn’t make any appearances in October. This data shows that The Young and the Restless is lagging behind the other four soaps in representation for people of color.
