Screenshare Report: Lisa Yamada Once Again Tops Episode Counts For September; Brook Kerr Takes The #2 Spot

Lisa yamada - cbs

The CBS Soap Opera Beyond the Gates, which premiered in February, is the first American Soap Opera with a predominantly African American cast since NBC’s Generations (1989-91). Unsurprisingly, daytime's newest drama leads in on-screen representation for people of color. Still, the four legacy soaps have much work to do regarding representation for people of color.

ABC’s General Hospital currently features the most actors of color, with 16 cast members, but only seven are under contract. Four of these recurring cast members didn’t appear on the soap in September, and the majority haven’t been seen in months or years. While CBS’ The Bold and the Beautiful’s Lisa Yamada has appeared in more episodes than any other performer of color for the past two months, the soap still has work to do, as Yamada’s appearances are far more frequent than those of her co-stars of color. Three  of The Bold and the Beautiful’s seven cast members of color didn’t appear in September, including two of whom are on contract. This data suggests that, while soaps have made space for actors of color, there is still a need to incorporate these actors into the canvas more productively.

Beyond the Gates: Contract actors Karla Mosley (Dani Dupree Hamilton), Jibre Hordges (Jacob Hawthorne) and RhonniRose Mantilla (Chelsea Hamilton) made the most appearances of color on Beyond the Gates in September, with 11 out of 17 episodes. Beyond the Gates didn’t air for the week of Sept. 1-5, which explains the lower episode count compared to the other soaps. Mosley also topped the episode counts in August, but her September totals are down from the prior month, when had 14 appearances. Meanwhile, four recurring and one guest actor appeared in the fewest episodes in September: Karan Kendrick (Mona Wilson), Arle Michel (Peaches), Gregory M. Mitchell (Gabe), Robert Christopher Riley (Dr. Carlton Fitzgerald) and Brennen Suttle (Nathan).

Murielle Hilaire and Lawrence St. Victor - cbs

The Bold and the Beautiful: Lisa Yamada (Luna Nozawa) was again the contract performer of color who made the most on-screen appearances in September. Yamada appeared in 19 out of 22 episodes throughout the month, more than any other performer on The Bold and the Beautiful, and more than any performer of color on all five Soap Operas in production. This is an improvement from her August episode count of 15 out of 21 episodes.

However, Yamada appeared in significantly more episodes in September than her co-stars of color. Recurring actress Naomi Matsuda (Dr. Li Finnegan) had the second most appearances in September, but only in 10 episodes. Murielle Hilaire (Daphne Rose) was the contract actress of color who made the fewest on-screen appearances, with only three episodes. Meanwhile, three performers of color didn’t make any appearances in September, two of whom are on contract: Delon de Metz (Zende Forrester Dominguez), Romy Park (Poppy Nozawa), and Dan Martin (Lieutenant Bradley Baker). This data suggests that The Bold and the Beautiful could benefit from featuring more of the performers of color in their cast, instead of focusing the story on one actress.

Rachel Boyd - Jill Johnson/JPI

Days of Our Lives: Rachel Boyd (Sophia Choi) is the most frequent contract performer of color on Peacock’s Days of Our Lives in September, appearing in 8 of the 22 episodes. Boyd was previously the most featured performer of color on the soap in July, appearing in 10 of the 23 episodes. She appeared in fewer episodes in September than she did in July, and also less than Cherie Jimenez (Gabi DiMera), who appeared in nine episodes in August, more than any other performer of color on Days of Our Lives that month.

Contract actors Elia Cantu (Jada Hunter) and James Reynolds (Abe Carver) were tied as the performers of color with the least screen time in August, appearing in two episodes. Meanwhile, recurring actress Shi Ne Nielson (Amy Choi) was the only performer of color who didn’t appear in September. These figures indicate that Days of Our Lives outperforms the other three legacy soaps in terms of representation for people of color, but can still improve by including their underutilized actors of color more frequently.

brooke kerr - abc

General Hospital: On ABC’s General Hospital, the longest running American Soap Opera in production, Brook Kerr (Dr. Portia Robinson) is the contract performer of color with the most on-screen appearances in September. Kerr was featured in 12 episodes out of the 20 that aired during the month. This is growth from Donnell Turner (Curtis Ashford), who appeared in 10 episodes in August, more than any performer of color that month. Adrian Anchondo (Marco Rios) is the contract actor of color who appeared in the fewest episodes in September, with just two. This is surprising considering Anchondo appeared in more episodes of the 62-year-old soap than any other performer of color in July, 10 out of 22. This is a puzzling decrease in screen time and suggests that General Hospital should focus more on rotating its characters and stories for people of color.

Recurring actress Cassandra James (Dr. Terry Randolph) only appeared in one episode in September, fewer than any performer of color that was featured in September. This is a concerning trend, as Dr. Randolf is the first transgender character in a Soap Opera to be portrayed by a transgender performer. Ever since her introduction in the summer of 2018, General Hospital has struggled to include James in a compelling story arc, which is a disservice to both a talented actress and fans who can relate to her. Meanwhile, recurring actors Dioni Michelle Collins (Deanna Sirtis), Lydia Look (Selina Wu), Marc Samuel (Felix DuBois), and Parry Shen (Brad Cooper) weren’t featured during the month. Three of these actors appear very infrequently, while Samuel hasn’t been seen since the January 2024 memorial episode for Jaclyn Zeman (Bobbie Spencer).

The Young and the Restless: Contract actor Nathan Owens (Holden Novak) and recurring actress Zuleyka Silver (Audra Charles) tied as the performers of color who were featured most frequently on The Young and the Restless in September, appearing in seven out of 22 episodes each. Both appeared less than any performer of color on the other four soaps, indicating The Young and the Restless is falling behind in representation for people of color. Silver was featured in fewer episodes than her totals for August, when she also topped episode counts, appearing in 10 out of 21 episodes. Silver was also the only recurring performer of color who appeared in September. Contract actor Bryton James (Devon Winters) is the contract actor of color who made the fewest appearances in September, with only one episode.
