Screen Share Report: Lisa Yamada and Karla Mosley Dominate 2025

Lisa Yamada and Karla Mosley - Howard Wise/jpi studios/Quantrell Colbert/CBS

The CBS soap opera Beyond the Gates closed out 2025 on a high note. The series premiered in February and is the first American soap opera to feature a predominantly Black cast since NBC’s Generations (1989-1991). Beyond the Gates is also the first new soap opera to debut in the United States since One Life to Live’s television series finale on ABC in 2012, as well as the first daytime drama to debut in the United States since NBC’s Passions (1999-2008).

Other strides towards representation for people of color were made on CBS’s The Bold and the Beautiful in 2025, with contract actress Lisa Yamada consistently topping monthly episode counts. Meanwhile, Peacock’s Days of Our Lives has maintained a healthy blend of actors of color in its cast. On the other hand, ABC’s General Hospital and CBS’s The Young and the Restless have fallen behind with representation of people of color. The longest-running American soap opera in production, General Hospital, features several actors of color in its cast who don’t appear in every episode of a given month. Meanwhile, The Young and the Restless has fewer performers of color in its cast than any of the other four soap operas on the air.

Beyond the Gates: Contract performers Clifton Davis (Vernon Dupree) and Karla Mosley (Dani Dupree Hamilton) each appeared in 14 out of 20 episodes in December 2025, more than any performer of color that month. This is an impressive feat for Mosley, who topped monthly episode counts from August to October. Additionally, Mosley was featured in more episodes of Beyond the Gates in 2025 than any actor of color, appearing in 137 out of 199 episodes.

Alex Alegria (Tomás Navarro) and Brandon Claybon (Martin Richardson) tied as the contract actors of color who were featured in the fewest episodes of Beyond the Gates in December. They appeared in seven episodes each. Meanwhile, former contract actor Maurice Johnson (original actor for Ted Richardson) appeared in only 36 episodes throughout the year, concluding with his last episode on May 13. Richardson is now portrayed by contract actor Keith D. Robinson as of May 15. This marked the first, and thus far, only recast for Beyond the Gates.

Donnell Turner - abc

General Hospital: Contract actor Donnell Turner (Curtis Ashford) was featured in 14 out of 21 episodes of General Hospital throughout December 2025, more than any actor of color on the ABC soap opera. This number ties him with Clifton Davis and Karla Mosley of CBS’s Beyond the Gates for appearing in more episodes than any actor of color across all five soaps. Meanwhile, recurring actress Lydia Look (Selina Wu) appeared in only two episodes during the month, fewer than any performer of color on General Hospital. Lastly, recurring actresses Dioni Michelle Collins (Nurse Deanna Sirtis) and Cassandra James (Dr. Terry Randolph) didn’t make any appearances in December 2025.

Contract actress Brook Kerr (Dr. Portia Robinson) appeared in 115 episodes of General Hospital in 2025, more than any performer of color on the soap. Recurring actresses Christina Ferraro (Dr. Navarro) and Cassandra James were featured in fewer episodes than any performer of color on General Hospital, with two appearances each. This is especially concerning as General Hospital lacks representation for transgender characters, and James is a trans woman. Since her introduction in 2018, Randolf hasn’t had many compelling storylines, making her presence feel performative. James’ lived experiences as a transwoman can bring a compelling perspective to her character, and it’s a waste for General Hospital not to explore that avenue.

Meanwhile, contract actor Bryton James (Devon Winters) appeared in just two episodes. Lastly, recurring actress Valerie Pettiford (Amy Lewis) didn’t make any appearances in December.

Top Appearances of 2025: With the premiere of Beyond the Gates on CBS in February 2025, great achievements were made towards representation for people of color in the media. Outside of daytime’s newest drama, further steps were taken by the four legacy soaps regarding representation. For example, Lisa Yamada of The Bold and the Beautiful appeared in more episodes than any performer of color across five soap operas in production. However, The Bold and the Beautiful and The Young and the Restless have the fewest performers of color in their cast, with only six. Similarly, three of these actors on The Bold and the Beautiful didn’t appear in December, leaving much to be desired concerning representation for people of color.

Additionally, The Young and the Restless consistently features its performers of color in less than half of a given month’s episodes. These statistics suggest that America’s highest-rated soap would do well to focus on balancing its characters and storylines better moving forward. Furthermore, General Hospital has the second-highest number of actors of color in its cast, at 14. At the same time, there’s still room for improvement when it comes to the frequency of screen time for these actors and the quality of their storylines. Going into 2026, we celebrate diversity and inclusion in our favorite soaps, and remember there’s still much work to be done with representation for people of color in the media.
