Screenshare Report: Arielle Prepetit tops episode counts; ‘The Young and the Restless’ and ‘The Bold and the Beautiful’ slip with representation

The CBS soap opera Beyond the Gates consistently leads in representation for people of color on daytime television. Premiering in February 2025, Beyond the Gatesis the first soap opera to feature a predominantly African-American cast since NBC’s Generations (1989-1991), and the first soap opera to debut on American television since Passions (1999-2008). It is also the first soap opera to debut since the 2012 cancellation of ABC’s One Life to Live (1968-2013).

The longest-running American soap opera in production, ABC’s General Hospital, enjoys an admirable presence of 15 actors of color in its cast. However, multiple recurring cast members haven’t appeared in several months. Meanwhile, Peacock’s Days of our Lives repeatedly features characters of color at the center of compelling storylines. On the other hand, CBS soaps The Young and the Restless and The Bold and the Beautiful continue to fall behind their competitors for representation of people of color. Both soaps consistently feature actors of color in less than half of a given month’s episodes and feature the fewest characters of color on screen.

Beyond the Gates: Throughout May, Arielle Prepetit (Naomi Hamilton Hawthorne) appeared in more episodes than any contract or recurring performer of color on the soap. Prepetit appeared in 15 of the 18 episodes that aired, topping Daphnée Duplaix’s (Nicole Dupree) April totals. Meanwhile, Lami (Izaiah Hawthorne) was featured in only three episodes, fewer than any contract and several recurring performers of color on Beyond the Gates.

Khalil tops the episode count for the second month in a row, down from 11 appearances in April. Meanwhile, recurring actress Valerie Pettiford (Amy Lewis) was featured in any episodes throughout May. Pettiford hasn’t appeared on The Young and the Restless since January, at which point she was only featured in one episode. These figures suggest that The Young and the Restless has several improvements to make towards representation for people of color.
