Throughout each month, the CBS soap opera Beyond the Gates consistently leads in representation for people of color. Notably, the soap is the only daytime drama on air to feature a predominantly African-American cast. However, in June, some actors of color still made zero appearances.
Peacock’s Days of Our Lives (1965-), the only soap opera to air exclusively on a streaming service, features people of color prominently on screen. However, June marked a notable decrease in screen time. Meanwhile, the longest-running daytime drama currently in production, ABC’s General Hospital (1963-), features a healthy presence of people of color in its cast. Conversely, CBS’s The Young and the Restless (1973-) and The Bold and the Beautiful (1987-) each feature fewer performers of color in their casts than their competitors. Between the four legacy soaps, no actors of color appeared in even half of the months' episodes.
Trisha Mann-Grant and Ernestine Johnson - CBS
Beyond the Gates: Keith D. Robinson (Theodore "Ted" Richardson) was featured more than any other actor on Beyond the Gates, appearing in 16 out of 20 episodes in June. Notably, this was the first instance in which the actor topped episode counts for America’s youngest soap. Robinson also topped the previous screen-time winner, Arielle Prepetit (Naomi Hamilton Hawthorne), who appeared in 15 episodes in May. Marquita Goings (Hayley Lawson Hamilton) appeared in only nine episodes in June, fewer than any other actor of color on the soap. Lastly, Ernestine Johnson (Shanice Johnson) was featured in 12 episodes, the most of any recurring cast member of color on the daytime drama.

The Bold and the Beautiful: In June, Delon de Metz (Zende Forrester Dominguez) and Lawrence St. Victor (Carter Walton) tied with each other for appearing in more episodes than any actor of color on The Bold and the Beautiful. Each appeared in six episodes, far below the 22 that aired during the month. Murielle Hillaire (Daphne Rose), the only other contract performer of color on the soap, was featured the least out of the contract actors, with just one episode. Meanwhile, recurring actors Dan Martin (Lieutenant Bradley Baker) and Naomi Matsuda (Li Finnegan) didn’t make any appearances in June. This data suggests that the soap needs to improve its representation of people of color if it hopes to continue beating General Hospital and Beyond the Gates in the ratings.

At the same time, recurring actress Nikki Crawford (Lexie Carver) tied with them, appearing in more episodes than any other recurring and several contract actors of color on the soap. Impressively, June marked the first time in which Escoria topped episode counts since joining the soap’s cast. Jimenez previously topped episode counts in May, appearing in 13 episodes, marking an unusual decrease in screen time for actors of color on the soap. Contract actor Jacob Martinez (Javi Hernandez) tied with recurring actresses Tina Huang (Melinda Trask) and Shi Ne Nielson (Amy Choi) for the fewest appearances among actors of color on the soap, with one each.

General Hospital: Nazneen Contractor (Justine Turner) and Donnell Turner (Curtis Ashford) tied for the most episodes by any actor of color on General Hospital. Impressively, Turner tops episode counts for the third consecutive month, although his June figures are far below his previous totals. At the same time, June marked the first time that Contractor topped episode counts as a contract cast member.
Sawandi Wilson (Dr. Isaiah Gannon) was featured in just four episodes, once again making fewer appearances than any contract actor of color on the soap. Jens Austin Astrup (Kai Taylor) topped episode counts for recurring cast members of color, with three appearances. Meanwhile, recurring actors Dioni Michelle Collins (Deanna Sirtis), Robert Gossett (Marshall Ashford), Cassandra James (Dr. Terry Randolph), and Parry Shen (Brad Cooper) didn’t make any appearances in June. James and Shen both haven’t appeared on the soap for several months, which is a concerning trend. General Hospital is already lacking in representation for both the trans and Chinese-American communities, so the absence of these characters leaves a large hole in the soap’s canvas.

The Young and the Restless: The highest-rated soap in the United States, The Young and the Restless made small improvements towards representation of people of color in June. Christel Khalil (Lily Winters) once again topped episode counts, with nine appearances. Impressively, June marked the third consecutive month in which Khalil topped episode counts for the soap. Vivica A. Fox returned to the soap in June after a 30-year absence. With seven total appearances, Fox appeared in more episodes than recurring and several contract performers of color.
Bryton James (Devon Hamilton) appeared in just two episodes, dead last in screen time for actors of color. James tied with recurring actor Shemar Moore (Malcolm Winters) for appearing in fewer episodes than any other actor of color on the soap. Meanwhile, recurring actress Valerie Pettiford (Amy Lewis) didn’t make any appearances in June.
